GHOSTLIGHT RECORDS, a division of Sh-K-Boom Records, will release the world premiere recording of the Manhattan Theatre Club’s new Broadway musical LoveMusik, which was nominated for four Tony Awards. The production - starring Tony Award winners Michael Cerveris and Donna Murphy and featuring the songs of Kurt Weill - was called an "audacious work that never shies away from taking risks" by Variety and "altogether remarkable" by The New York Post. The recording, produced by Joel Moss with Kurt Deutsch serving as Executive Producer, will be available in stores and online on November 27, 2007.
Suggested by the letters of Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya, LoveMusik features a book by Pulitzer and Tony Award-winner Alfred Uhry (Driving Miss Daisy, Parade). Musical staging was provided by Patricia Birch (A Little Night Music), and direction by 21-time Tony Award winner Harold Prince (The Phantom of the Opera, Cabaret, and Sweeney Todd). Songs range from his best known compositions like "Speak Low," "September Song" and "Surabaya Johnny" to rarely recorded songs such as "Wouldn’t You Like To be On Broadway?," "Girl of the Moment" and "A Bird of Passage."
LoveMusik follows the lives of the unlikeliest of lovers - the brilliant, intellectual German composer Kurt Weill (Michael Cerveris) and the woman who became his muse and star, Lotte Lenya (Donna Murphy). LoveMusik is an epic romance, set in Berlin, Paris, Broadway and Hollywood, spanning 25 years in the lives of this complicated couple.
Cerveris and Murphy both received Tony Award nominations for their performances in LoveMusik. The cast also features Outer Critics Circle Award winner, and Tony Award nominee David Pittu (Bertolt Brecht) and John Scherer (George Davis), with Judith Blazer, Edwin Cahill, Herndon Lackey, Erik Liberman, Ann Morrison, Graham Rowat, Rachel Ulanet and Jessica Wright.
LoveMusik was honored with four Tony Award nominations; 12 Drama Desk nominations, receiving two awards for Donna Murphy's performance and Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations; and five Outer Critics Circle nominations, receiving two awards for Donna Murphy and David Pittu's performances.
The show features the lyrics of Maxwell Anderson, Bertolt Brecht, Howard Dietz, Roger Fernay, Ira Gershwin, Oscar Hammerstein II, Langston Hughes, Alan Jay Lerner, Maurice Magre, Ogden Nash, Elmer Rice and Kurt Weill. Orchestrations are by Jonathan Tunick, musical supervisor is Kristen Blodgette, music coordinator is Seymour Red Press, additional vocal arrangements are by Milton Granger and conductor is Nicholas Archer. LoveMusik was produced by Manhattan Theatre Club by special arrangement with Marty Bell, Aldo Scrofani, Boyett Ostar Productions, Tracy Aron, Roger Berlind/Debra Black, Chase Mishkin, and Ted Snowdon.
ABOUT GHOSTLIGHT:
It is a standing practice in the theatre that a ghostlight - a floor lamp holding a single bare light bulb - be lit on stage after everyone has left for the night, so that the theatre never goes dark. In the same spirit, Ghostlight Records, created by Sh-K-Boom co-founders Kurt Deutsch & Sherie Rene Scott, ensures that music of the theatre by composers old and new will always be enjoyed. Ghostlight Records honors the past while shining a light toward the future. Ghostlight Records was honored with a special 2006 Drama Desk Award for dedication to the preservation of musical theatre through cast recordings, as well as Grammy Award nominations for Best Musical Show Album: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Hair (The Actors' Fund Of America Benefit Recording), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and most recently The Drowsy Chaperone. Other recent recordings include the original cast recording of Legally Blonde, Martin Short - Fame Becomes Me, High Fidelity, See What I Wanna See and Bernarda Alba by Michael John LaChiusa, Irving Berlin's White Christmas, Patti LuPone's The Lady With The Torch and LoveMusik.
